Across the Ebro River stands Amposta a town steeped in history. Ernest Hemingway himself once gazed upon its beauty. He wrote about Amposta during the Spanish Civil War. The scene captivated him. The Ebro Delta at dusk shifted gracefully. Its beauty depended on light mood and even our own mood.

Amposta is more than just a pretty picture. It’s the capital of the Montsià county. Historians believe it was even the capital of the Ibera territory before the Romans arrived. Amposta’s rich history spans centuries. Some believe it was an Iberian capital before the Romans destroyed it during the Second Punic War. The Romans then established a settlement near the Carrova Tower. They built an inn Amni Imposita which gave the town its name. The Arabs built a fort on the same site. Ramon Berenguer III and his cousin conquered Amposta and Tortosa. The Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem later held Amposta Castle. The castle had a period of prosperity and later decline. The town suffered attacks from pirates and periods of decline. In the 17th to 19th centuries Amposta slowly recovered. Rice cultivation and other industries like rice and oil mills boosted its growth. By the early 20th century Amposta had 4000 inhabitants.

The Amposta Suspension Bridge a marvel of engineering was built between 1915 and 1919. It was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War then rebuilt in 1947. The engineer José Eugenio Ribera was a pioneer in reinforced concrete but used metal cables for this challenging project. This bridge is Amposta’s most important symbol. It connects cultures Amposta was even the Catalan Culture capital in 2006.
