Hidden amongst the charming houses and bustling streets of Cambridge stands Saint Peter’s Church. A seemingly small structure it holds centuries of history within its walls.

Saint Peter’s has been a place of worship for over a millennium. Its origins possibly trace back to the Anglo-Saxon period though evidence only confirms its existence from the 12th century. The present building though a far cry from its medieval predecessor. Over the years Saint Peter’s has undergone numerous reconstructions. The most significant being in 1781. This rebuilding reduced its scale significantly. Yet some medieval features remain.

Marvel at the 13th-century south doorway. Notice its remarkably preserved Norman arch and the engaged shafts. These are remnants of a much earlier building. The 12th-century font is another treasure. Admire its unique carvings of mermen holding their bifurcated tails. These charming merfolk add a touch of whimsy to the church’s serious history.

The initials AP adorn the weathervane atop the 14th-century octagonal spire. These are believed to belong to Andrew Perne a controversial 16th-century figure. Whether he was a Papist a Protestant or a Puritan depended on the wind’s direction according to local lore.

Despite periods of near dereliction Saint Peter’s has endured. In the 1930s the church underwent extensive restoration. Today it’s under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It’s a testament to the community’s dedication. It stands as a beautiful reminder of Cambridge’s rich and layered past.
