Also known as Castelo de Moreira, this medieval fortress has witnessed centuries of Portuguese history. Arnoia Castle was likely built in the late 11th or early 12th century. Its purpose was to defend the nearby monastery. You can imagine the importance of this strategic location. The castle’s hilltop position offered commanding views of the surrounding valley. This allowed them to spot potential threats from afar. Over the years, Arnoia Castle played a crucial role in the region’s defenses. Sadly, it was abandoned around 1717. At this time, many of the elite families moved away from the village of Basto to Britelo. Despite its current state of ruin, Arnoia Castle still holds tangible traces of its fascinating past. Look for the quadrangular tower, a testament to the castle’s former strength. Picture the watchtower, its rooftop and battlements reconstructed to give us a glimpse of its original grandeur.
