Adjacent to the Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway station lies the Rockaway Parkway Yard also known as Canarsie Yard. This isn’t just any train yard. It’s a vital part of the New York City Subway system’s history.
The Rockaway Parkway Yard has been a key player in the area’s transportation since the late 19th century. Before it became an electrified part of the BMT Canarsie Line in 1906 it served a steam dummy line. That earlier line ran from the Long Island Rail Road in East New York all the way to Canarsie Landing. Ferries then continued the journey to Rockaway. The single-track line wasn’t upgraded to dual track until 1894.
The yard’s unique features are fascinating. It’s located at street level. This is unusual for a New York City subway yard. The station itself has an island platform with two stub-tracks. The tracks end at offset bumper blocks. Track 2 is slightly shorter due to the station’s diagonal alignment with the street grid.
What makes Rockaway Parkway Yard truly special is its integrated bus transfer. This is the only station in the entire subway system with a bus transfer station within fare control. This free transfer to buses like the B42 is a direct legacy of the original Canarsie Line which extended to Canarsie Pier. When the trolleys were replaced by buses in 1949 the free transfer remained. Passengers can seamlessly switch between subway and bus without leaving the fare control area.
The yard has seen its share of changes. In the 2010s the station underwent a significant renovation. This included ADA accessibility upgrades. These improvements made the station more accessible for everyone. The bus terminal was also renovated.
Today the Rockaway Parkway Yard continues to serve as a vital part of Brooklyn’s transportation network. It stands as a testament to the evolution of transit in New York City. A quiet yet significant piece of the city’s history sits just beyond the end of the L train’s southernmost stop. The yard’s unique blend of history and modern accessibility makes it a truly remarkable place.
