Wrong corner. That’s how the story of the Buster Keaton Studios Plaque begins. Initially placed on the northwest corner of Lillian Way and Eleanor Avenue the plaque was a bit off. It commemorated Buster Keaton’s studio but got the location wrong. The actual studio sat directly across the street on the southwest corner.

This plaque isn’t just a historical marker. It’s a testament to a comedic genius. Buster Keaton a silent film legend filmed numerous classics here. Sherlock Jr and Our Hospitality are just two examples. In total he produced 19 shorts and 10 features at this very spot. Even more remarkable this location also housed Charlie Chaplin. He filmed 12 of his greatest shorts there. The plaque though initially missed this detail.

The original plaque suffered from poor materials. Severe erosion made it nearly illegible. The inaccurate placement added to its woes. It simply wasn’t up to the standard of Keaton’s artistry. A true Keaton-esque mishap. Thankfully in 2018 a new set of plaques and a mural were installed. This time on the correct corner.

The new plaques are much better. They correct the location error and acknowledge Chaplin’s contribution. They pay proper homage to these two comedic titans of silent film. The mural is a stunning depiction of Keaton his iconic stone-faced expression capturing his essence perfectly.

Stand here on the southwest corner of Lillian Way and Eleanor Avenue. Feel the history. Imagine Keaton and Chaplin at work. Their laughter their creativity their sheer genius infused this very spot. This is more than just a plaque. It’s a portal to a golden age of Hollywood. A tribute to two masters of silent film comedy. Take a moment to appreciate this legacy. Then cross the street. See the original plaque. A reminder of how even legends can make a mistake. But also of the enduring power of their work. The magic still lingers.
