Beneath the sprawling branches of Parco Montestella, a secret sleeps. A secret born from destruction. Parco Montestella isn’t just a park. It’s a phoenix, rising from the ashes of World War II. Milan, scarred by bombings, was left with mountains of rubble. What to do with this debris of war? Architect Piero Bottoni had a vision. He saw not destruction, but the potential for rebirth. He envisioned a green oasis, a place of peace and recreation born from the remnants of conflict. This vision became Parco Montestella, also known as “Little Mountain of San Siro.” The rubble, once a symbol of loss, was transformed into a 45-meter high hill. Bottoni dedicated this man-made mountain to his wife, Stella, forever etching her name into the landscape of Milan. Imagine strolling along the winding paths, ascending the hill in gentle steps. The panoramic road offers breathtaking views of the city. On a clear day, the Alps and Apennines rise majestically in the distance. The park covers 370,000 square meters. It’s a vibrant tapestry of wooded areas and meadows. Among the trees, a poignant space exists. The “Giardino dei Giusti,” or Garden of the Just, honors those who stood against genocide and crimes against humanity. Each tree in this garden is a living tribute to their courage.
