The first Baptist preacher in New Orleans wasn’t a man of the cloth but a man of the sea. James A. Raynoldson, a sailor from North Carolina, arrived in the bustling city in 1816. His arrival marked the beginning of a faith journey that was about to transform the city. The First Baptist Church stands tall on the corner of Valence and Robertson streets, a testament to the unwavering spirit of its founding fathers. The early days of First Baptist Church were challenging. It was a period when the city was dominated by Catholic influence, and Baptists faced discrimination and obstacles. In fact, the first Baptist church in the entire State of Louisiana was organized in 1812 in Washington parish, near the Bogue Chitto river. It was called Half Moon Bluff Church and is now extinct. The Calvary Baptist Church, located in Bayou Chicot, St. Landry parish, was founded the same year and is still in existence today. Its first congregation met on December 28, 1843, when a small group of believers, brave enough to defy the odds, gathered for a service of hope and faith. The story of First Baptist Church, now a thriving beacon of faith, is one of resilience, commitment to its cause, and enduring faith. The church has grown and evolved, it has stood witness to the good times and the hard times of the city. Today, it continues to spread a message of hope and love, its doors are open to all who seek peace and spiritual guidance.
