Ever wonder what it’s like to step back in time? You’re about to find out as we explore Christiansø. This small Danish island in the Baltic Sea is not just a place. It’s a living piece of history.

Christiansø is the largest island in the Ertholmene archipelago. It lies 18 km northeast of Bornholm. This island covers only 0.22 square kilometers. Yet, it holds stories that stretch back centuries. Imagine a place where the buildings are protected. That place is Christiansø.

Christian V founded Christiansø fortress in 1684. Engineer Anthony Coucheron led the construction. Up to 450 men were involved. They quarried granite right here. Other materials came by sea. In 1808, an English fleet bombarded the fortress. Seven people died and ten were injured. By 1855, the fortress lost its military importance. It was then abandoned.

Today, around 40000 tourists visit Christiansø and Frederiksø every year. Most come for a day trip. Some stay longer. Accommodation options include Gæstgiveriet Hotel and Ballonen. Ballonen is an old prison. It was converted into a hostel. There is also Hestehytten cabin and a campsite.

The island has a unique status in Denmark. It’s not part of a municipality or region. Residents pay state tax but not municipal tax. The Ministry of Defence owns and manages the island group.

Before 2013, Christiansø was known for fishing. The last fisherman moved away that year. Now, tourism drives the local economy.

The island offers guided tours. These tours bring the history to life. You’ll see nesting eider ducks. You’ll see a unique nature. Græsholm is a bird reserve. It is home to black and white auks and guillemots. Gray seals also live here.

Explore Store Tårn. It holds exhibitions and concerts. From here, you can see the entire archipelago. Visit Lille Tårn. It tells stories of fishing, defense, and daily life.

Don’t miss Ruths Kryddersild. It is made following a secret recipe. The local inn offers rooms and meals. A kiosk is also available.

Christiansø is also a nature park since 2020. Spring brings migratory birds. Summer offers swimming and outdoor life. The island hosts dances and concerts. Autumn is mild. Birds pass by on their way to their winter homes. Winter is peaceful.

Christiansø is Denmark’s easternmost inhabited island. It offers a unique blend of history. It also offers nature and culture. It is a place where time seems to stand still. A visit here is more than just a trip. It’s an experience.
