What secrets does the Heuscheuer hold? This unassuming building, right before your eyes, has witnessed centuries of Heidelberg’s history. The Heuscheuer, originally built in the 18th century, wasn’t always a place for lectures. It began its life as a communal granary. Constructed from the remnants of Heidelberg’s old city wall, the Heuscheuer stands as a testament to the city’s evolving landscape. Interestingly, the Heuscheuer occupies the site of a former defensive tower, the Mantel- or Frauenturm. Look closely. You can still see traces of the past. A staircase within leads to what remains of the old defense tower. Inside, a copy of a Roman tomb adds another layer of historical intrigue to the Heuscheuer. This building, now primarily used by Heidelberg University for lectures, has played many roles throughout its existence. It served as storage for hay for the neighboring Marstall, or stable, until 1824. Later, it transitioned into a municipal warehouse before finding its current purpose as a university lecture hall in the mid-1960s. The Heuscheuer in Heidelberg whispers tales of fortifications, granaries, and academic pursuits. It stands as a quiet observer, holding within its walls the echoes of Heidelberg’s vibrant past.
