Is there a more peaceful place in all of Philadelphia than the Magnolia Garden? Right here, tucked away on Locust Street between 4th and 5th, lies a hidden gem. This tranquil oasis, the Magnolia Garden, isn’t just a feast for the eyes, it’s a tribute to the very foundation of the United States. Dedicated in 1959, the Magnolia Garden was a gift from the Garden Club of America, a testament to the nation’s founders. George Washington himself, a known admirer of magnolias, inspired the garden’s creation. Thirteen majestic saucer magnolias ring the garden’s perimeter, each a symbol of the original thirteen colonies. Look around you – the wrought iron fences, the meticulously kept lawn, the benches beckoning you to sit and stay awhile. Notice the central lawn panel edged with a walkway of rectangular stones. At one end, a wall fountain whispers a gentle welcome. At the other, a circular basin sends a single jet of water skyward. But the magnolias are the true stars, their early spring blossoms a breathtaking sight. And as you stroll along the paths, you’ll discover other treasures: snow-white azaleas, honey locusts, English oaks, cotoneasters, and a carpet of English ivy. The Magnolia Garden, a place of quiet beauty, a living testament to history, a peaceful escape in the heart of the city.
