Tufts Dental School’s history is rich. It began as Boston Dental College founded by Dr Isaac J Wetherbee a graduate of Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. In 1899 it joined Tufts College. The school’s early years were marked by a focus on medical knowledge and practical experience. The curriculum included anatomy physiology materia medica histology and various dental techniques. Early facilities were inadequate leading to the eventual merger with Tufts.
The school faced challenges. In 1948 it relocated closer to the New England Medical Center after selling its Huntington Avenue buildings. The move was partially due to a devastating fire destroying a floating hospital affiliated with the school. Later the school moved to its current location at 1 Kneeland Street. A significant five-story expansion in 2009 enhanced its facilities. This modern addition won architectural awards.
Tufts Dental School offers more than just the Doctor of Dental Medicine DMD degree. It provides combined DMD/MS degrees and DMD/MPH degrees.
