Did the name Dalhousie Square ever cross your ears? Right here in Kolkata, stands B. B. D. Bagh. It was once known as Dalhousie Square. This place whispers tales of British power and Indian resilience. B. B. D. Bagh isn’t just a square. It’s a stage where history unfolded.

B. B. D. Bagh cradles iconic structures like the Writer’s Building. It also holds the General Post Office and the Reserve Bank of India. This place is a living museum of Victorian architecture. B. B. D. Bagh stands as a testament to Kolkata’s rich past. It’s a vibrant hub where history and modernity intertwine.

Our story begins in the 18th century. The British East India Company chose this spot. They established their trading post along the Hooghly River. Fort William stood between the river and Lal Dighi tank. In 1756, Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah attacked the British town. This attack led to the tragic Black Hole of Calcutta incident. The British, under Robert Clive, soon regained control. Calcutta became the epicenter of British India. B. B. D. Bagh blossomed into a symbol of British dominance.

B. B. D. Bagh’s original name, Dalhousie Square, honored Lord Dalhousie. He was the Governor-General of India from 1847 to 1856. The Writer’s Building initially served the East India Company’s clerks. It later became the secretariat of the Viceroy of India. The square buzzed with activity. Numerous corporations and institutions set up their offices here. B. B. D. Bagh became the central business district. Even after the British moved their capital to New Delhi in 1912, B. B. D. Bagh retained its importance.

The Indian Independence Movement gained momentum in the early 20th century. On December 8, 1930, a pivotal event occurred. Three revolutionaries, Benoy, Badal, and Dinesh, stormed the Writer’s Building. They assassinated N.S. Simpson, the Inspector General of Prisons. The trio then attempted suicide. Binoy and Badal succeeded, while Dinesh was captured and later executed. This act of defiance resonated deeply. After India gained independence, Dalhousie Square was renamed B. B. D. Bagh. This honored the bravery of Benoy, Badal, and Dinesh.

Today, B. B. D. Bagh remains the heart of Kolkata. The Writer’s Building now serves as the secretariat of the West Bengal government. It houses the Chief Minister’s office. The square continues to be a bustling hub. Offices, businesses, and historical landmarks coexist here. B. B. D. Bagh is a blend of old and new.
