Have you ever felt the rhythm of oars slicing through water? The Rudergemeinschaft Angaria e.V. in Hanover invites you to experience just that. Right here on the Weddigenufer we stand before a club steeped in history.

Founded in 1886 not as a rowing club but as a “Verein akademischer Radfahrer” an academic cycling club. Imagine gentlemen cycling velocipedes through the quiet streets of Hanover. A rarity at the time. It was a forward-thinking group promoting cycling through rides races and social events. The club’s colors then as now were green white and red. However as the bicycle gained popularity the club lost its young members. In 1898 the cycling club was suspended. A new club the “Akademischer Fussball-Club” was formed. Quickly renamed the “Akademischer Ballsportverein”.

In 1902 rowing officially entered the club’s activities. They changed their name to “Akademischer Ruder- und Ballsportverein” shortly ARBV Hannover. Rowing eventually overshadowed ball sports. The name was changed again in 1906 to “Akademischer Ruder-Verein” ARV. Angaria’s dedication to rowing had begun.

On July 16 1927 after heated discussions the ARV adopted the name “Akademische Ruderverbindung Angaria”. Named after the Angrivarii a Saxon tribe. The current Rudergemeinschaft Angaria e.V. was founded on February 24 1936 after the previous Angaria was banned.

After World War II the Angaria renamed itself “Studentische Rudergemeinschaft Angaria” in 1972. This distanced the club from its origins as a student rowing association. The inclusion of women in the 1980s marked a further shift away from that past.

Today the Rudergemeinschaft Angaria e.V. is a member of the German Rowing Association. It’s a welcoming community for rowers from hobbyists to competitive athletes. Many members continue their involvement from student life into their careers. This friendly atmosphere is a hallmark of the club. Even today Angaria continues to compete nationally and internationally participating in prestigious events such as the Head of the River Race and the Head of the Charles Regatta. They even have their own annual cycling race the “Radrennen der Ruderer” a team time trial over the Brelinger Berg in autumn. This shows the club’s continued ties to its cycling heritage.

In 2024 Angaria installed solar panels reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. This reflects its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

So here you are at the heart of the Rudergemeinschaft Angaria e.V. A place with a rich history a thriving present and a promising future. Feel the spirit of this club its history palpable in the air. Feel the energy of those who came before and those who continue its legacy.
