“Junior hockey star”. That’s what they called Michael Matheson long before Matheson Cr was dedicated. This isn’t just another pretty spot. It’s a tribute to someone special.
Michael Wallace Matheson was born on February 27, 1994. He grew up in Pointe Claire, Quebec. Matheson showed immense talent early on. He played for the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the United States Hockey League. He then graduated from John Rennie High School in 2011.
Before Matheson Cr became a point of interest, Matheson was making waves in college hockey. As a freshman at Boston College, he earned All-Hockey East Rookie Team honors. He also received New England Division I all-star recognition. Matheson captured the program’s Bernie Burke Outstanding Freshman Award. He recorded 25 points with eight goals and 17 assists.
As a sophomore, Matheson led all defensemen in scoring. He tallied 21 points with three goals and 18 assists. Matheson earned All-America second team honors. He also earned All-Hockey East first-team honors. He was voted a New England Men’s Division I All-Star.
Serving as team captain, Matheson played in all 38 games as a junior. He led all defensemen for the third-consecutive season. He registered 25 points, logged three goals, and 22 assists. Matheson led Boston College with 22 assists.
But who was Michael Matheson away from the rink? He was a psychology major in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Florida Panthers selected him in the first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Matheson’s siblings, Kelly and Kenny, also shared his passion for hockey. Kenny played for the Hamilton College hockey team.
