Ever noticed those sleek black towers piercing the Century City skyline? Those are part of the Century City Medical Plaza.
The Century City Medical Plaza is more than just an office building. It’s an architectural landmark. Its story began in 1969. Architects Anthony J. Lumsden and César Pelli designed it.
These architects embraced the Late Modern style. The Century City Medical Plaza features two striking buildings. One is a seventeen-story office tower. The other is a ten-story structure that was previously a hospital.
These buildings were the first to be entirely enclosed in glass. It was a revolutionary design choice at the time. The reversed mullions play with traditional column design. This gives the Century City Medical Plaza its distinctive look.
Originally, the plaza housed Century City Hospital. Tenet Healthcare Corporation owned it. However, Tenet closed the hospital in 2004. It then sold the facility to Salus Surgical Group.
The hospital was renamed Century City Doctors Hospital. Sadly, it faced financial difficulties and closed in 2008. The hospital filed for bankruptcy.
But the story of this location didn’t end there. In 2016, the hospital underwent extensive remodeling. It reopened as the California Rehabilitation Institute. Select Medical owns it.
Today, the California Rehabilitation Institute provides inpatient rehabilitation services. These include physical therapy and occupational therapy. Speech therapy is also offered along with recreational therapy and neuropsychology.
The Century City Medical Plaza’s design made a significant impact. Its all-glass skin became a hallmark of corporate architecture for two decades. The buildings resemble large black boxes.
They stand as testaments to architectural innovation. The Century City Medical Plaza remains a prominent feature of the Los Angeles landscape. It has evolved to meet the changing needs of the community.
