TEDAŞ has a rich history. It dates back to 1970. The government established Türkiye Elektrik Kurumu TEK to manage electricity. TEK handled production, transmission, and distribution. In 1993, TEK was restructured. It split into two separate entities. These were Türkiye Elektrik Üretim İletim A.Ş. TEAŞ and TEDAŞ.
TEAŞ took over production and transmission. TEDAŞ focused on distribution. This division aimed to streamline the energy sector. It sought to improve efficiency. Further restructuring in 2001 created more specialized entities. Türkiye Elektrik İletim A.Ş. TEİAŞ, Elektrik Üretim A.Ş. EÜAŞ, and Türkiye Elektrik Ticaret ve Taahhüt A.Ş. TETAŞ emerged.
TEDAŞ’s organization is complex. The headquarters includes a board of directors. It also has various departments and advisory units. Its field organization underwent privatization. Regional electricity distribution companies were formed. TEDAŞ retained regional coordination offices. These offices oversee performance and training.
Privatization was a significant shift. TEDAŞ’s field organization split into 21 regional distribution companies. These companies were then privatized. The Başkent Elektrik Dağıtım A.Ş. serves Ankara and surrounding provinces.
In 1994, Ankara and Kırıkkale Electricity Distribution Institutions became Başkent Elektrik Dağıtım A.Ş. Başkent EDAŞ was registered in 1995. It began operations as a separate legal entity. Over time, Başkent EDAŞ expanded. It incorporated Kastamonu Elektrik Dağıtım Müessesesi and Karaelmas EDAŞ.
Today, Başkent EDAŞ operates in seven provinces. These include Ankara, Bartın, Çankırı, Karabük, Kastamonu, Kırıkkale, and Zonguldak. It is one of Turkey’s largest distribution regions. In 2008, Sabancı Verbund acquired Başkent EDAŞ. In 2009, its shares transferred to Enerjisa Elektrik Dağıtım A.Ş.
In 2012, Başkent EDAŞ separated its distribution and retail operations. TEDAŞ continues to play a vital role in Turkey’s electricity sector. It ensures the reliable distribution of power. It adapts to changing market conditions. It strives for continuous improvement.
