Here on Södergatan stands a symbol of Malmö’s spirit the Optimistorkestern. This isn’t just any sculpture it’s a lively celebration in bronze. The Optimistorkestern was created in 1985 by the talented artist Yngve Lundell.

The story of the Optimistorkestern began with a competition. The city sought artwork for its first pedestrian street. Lundell’s vision won. His sculpture would capture the city’s upbeat energy. The Optimistorkestern features four musicians and their enthusiastic director. They march forward with playful charm. Lundell wanted to symbolize optimism through his art.

Have you noticed how the Optimistorkestern brings joy? Passersby often stop to take pictures with these quirky musicians. Their lively poses and instruments create a cheerful atmosphere. The ensemble reminds many of the Bremen Town Musicians. The Optimistorkestern was erected to celebrate the pedestrianization of Södergatan. It quickly became an iconic landmark.

The sculpture wasn’t originally complete. Lundell envisioned a fifth musician. This musician was a drummer riding an elephant. City officials thought it too large for the pedestrian street. The “Drummer on Elephant” was created posthumously. It was placed in Malmö Folkets Park in 2020. This fulfilled Lundell’s complete artistic vision.

Imagine Lena Philipsson filming her Melodifestivalen postcard here in 1988. She competed with the song “Om igen”. The Optimistorkestern provided a vibrant backdrop for her performance.

Today the Optimistorkestern continues to inspire. It stands as a testament to Malmö’s creative spirit. It is a place-specific toy for adults. It reminds us to embrace optimism. As you continue your tour remember the joyful music of the Optimistorkestern. Its playful charm is a true reflection of Malmö.
