Picture the year 1777. Imagine a bustling scene. Soldiers of the Eight Banners march into Tanying. They establish a garrison. This region once known as Tan Department becomes Tanying. The name means Tan Barrack. It reflects the military presence. Tanying’s history is intertwined with these troops.

Tanying is more than just a historical military post. It is an ethnic township. Located in the Miyun District of Beijing it sits south of Ye Mountain. It borders Mujiayu Town Gulou Subdistrict and Miyun Town. In 2020 Tanying had over 15000 inhabitants. It’s a vibrant community. Its density is high nearly 5300 people per square kilometer.

Over the centuries Tanying’s administrative status shifted. From township to commune then back to township again. It became Tanying Manchu and Mongol Ethnic Township. Later it changed to Tanying Area. These changes reflect the broader political landscape of China. Its administrative divisions have evolved. In 2021 Tanying was formed from three residential communities.

The area of Tanying is about 2.9 square kilometers. That’s roughly 1.1 square miles. It sits at an elevation of 82 meters. That’s approximately 269 feet above sea level. Tanying’s geographical location is significant. Its proximity to Ye Mountain influences the area’s landscape and character.
