Why does the Gotthold Ephraim Lessing Statue stand here in the Tiergarten? This monument isn’t just a statue. It’s a testament to Lessing’s legacy. It’s a story etched in stone and bronze.

The Gotthold Ephraim Lessing Statue was unveiled on October 14 1890. It honors the influential German writer and playwright Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. He lived from 1729 to 1781. His works championed reason and tolerance. His ideas shaped the Enlightenment.

For decades before the statue’s creation Lessing’s admirers pushed for a monument. They envisioned a trio of statues. These would include Lessing Goethe and Schiller. The statues might stand before the Schauspielhaus. Instead Schiller’s statue appeared in 1871. Goethe’s followed in 1880. Both stand in the Tiergarten. Finally in 1886 a competition produced a design for Lessing. His relative Otto Lessing won.

Otto Lessing crafted a three-meter-high marble statue. It depicts a young Lessing holding an open book. The statue sits atop a four-meter-high granite pedestal. The pedestal’s artistic design features relief portraits. These include the writer and publisher Friedrich Nicolai. Also the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn and the poet Ewald von Kleist are featured. Sadly the water-spouting dolphins once flanking the pedestal are gone.

The Gotthold Ephraim Lessing Statue’s location has a poignant history. During the existence of the Berlin Wall the statue stood in a restricted part of the Tiergarten. Only after 1989 could people freely visit it again.

Today the Gotthold Ephraim Lessing Statue stands as a symbol of intellectual freedom. It’s a reminder of Lessing’s enduring influence. It’s a must-see for anyone exploring Berlin’s rich cultural heritage. The statue’s intricate details and historical context offer a profound reflection on Lessing’s life and works. Look closely. Notice how Lessing’s fingers divide the book. It separates the read from the unread. He gazes towards the Philharmonie. Perhaps he anticipates the music’s power to inspire. Perhaps he envisions the conversations it would spark. The Gotthold Ephraim Lessing Statue offers more than just a glimpse into history. It is a conversation starter for a continued exchange about Lessing’s continuing impact on literature philosophy and society.
