In 1964, a retail giant was born in the San Fernando Valley. Topanga Plaza, originally envisioned as the West Valley Center, opened its doors. It featured anchors like May Company California, Montgomery Ward, and The Broadway. Topanga Plaza quickly became a hub. It wasn’t just a place to shop. It was a place to be seen. Celebrities like Zsa Zsa Gabor and Lorne Green graced its grand openings. Imagine the excitement as shoppers strolled past the Rain Fountain, a mesmerizing display of water droplets cascading down delicate strings. The Ice Capades Chalet, an indoor ice rink, provided a cool escape from the California sun.
Topanga Plaza continued to evolve. In 1984, Nordstrom joined the anchor lineup. The mall underwent a significant renovation. It featured new columns, archways, and a fresh color palette. The Plaza Cafes Food Court became a central gathering spot. Ohrbach’s, a popular department store, opened a boutique in 1980. It offered a curated selection of fashionable items. The mall’s movie theater, the RKO-Stanley-Warner Topanga Theatre, stood across the street. It provided entertainment beyond shopping.
Topanga Plaza faced challenges over the years. The 1994 Northridge earthquake caused significant damage to the anchor stores, though the inline stores fared better. The mall recovered. The Broadway became a Sears. The May Company transformed into Robinsons-May, later becoming Macy’s. Montgomery Ward closed its doors in 2001. In the mid-2000s, a major expansion added a new wing. This new wing included a relocated Nordstrom and a Target. The original Nordstrom space eventually became home to Neiman Marcus.
Topanga Plaza remained a prominent feature in the San Fernando Valley. It appeared in films and television shows, capturing the essence of Los Angeles life. The Village at Westfield Topanga added to the mall’s allure. It offered a mix of high-end shops and restaurants. A former Sears space was reimagined as an entertainment district. This area included a food hall and a modern AMC Dine-In theater. Today, Topanga Plaza continues to adapt. It remains a destination for shoppers seeking a diverse mix of retail, dining, and entertainment.
