Saint Mocheanóg’s legacy echoes through Kilmacanoge. Kilmacanoge is nestled in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains, a picturesque village southwest of Bray. Kilmacanoge takes its name from “Cill Mocheanóg,” meaning Mocheanóg’s church. Legend says this saint, a companion of St. Patrick, baptized the Children of Lir shortly before their deaths. Kilmacanoge is cradled between the Little Sugar Loaf and the Great Sugar Loaf mountains. Two modest streams converge behind the old Post Office, forming the Kilmacanoge River. This river eventually flows into the River Dargle near Kilbride. Kilmacanoge offers a blend of history and modern amenities. You’ll find petrol stations, a primary school, a church, and a historic coaching inn. This inn dates back to the 19th century. It once served as a vital stop for travelers, including Charles Stewart Parnell on his journeys to his Avondale home. The Avoca Handweavers have an outlet on the north end of Kilmacanoge. This site once housed Glencormac House, built in 1860 by the Jameson Whiskey family. The house later became a hotel but sadly burned down in 1967. Even in the 20th century, Kilmacanoge faced unexpected events. On New Year’s Day 1942, the German Luftwaffe dropped two magnetic mines near the village, though thankfully they didn’t explode. Today, Kilmacanoge remains a vibrant hub. It’s home to a GAA club, Scouting Ireland group, Kilmac Drama, karate club, a history society, and Glencormac United football club. The singer Mary Coughlan and journalist Mariella Frostrup have called Kilmacanoge home.
