Was there ever a place where faith intertwined with Javanese tradition as beautifully as at Hidayat Islam in Paramaribo? In the early 20th century, Javanese Muslims, newly arrived in Suriname, built their mosques facing west, towards Mecca as they perceived it from their homeland. However, upon interacting with Hindustani Muslims in the 1930s, they realized that Mecca lay to the east of Suriname. This discovery created a fascinating distinction within the community, between those who prayed facing east (“wong ngadep ngetan”) and those who continued to pray facing west (“wong ngadep ngulon”). Hidayat Islam reflects this historical nuance. The east-facing worshippers, primarily Hindustani Muslims, adhered to a more orthodox interpretation of Islam. The west-facing Javanese Muslims, however, maintained a stronger connection to their traditional Javanese culture. This cultural fusion shaped the practices and traditions observed at Hidayat Islam, creating a unique expression of faith.
