“Ever heard of a shrine that started as a temple? Welcome to Chiba Shrine. This isn’t just any shrine. It’s a place where Buddhism and Shintoism intertwine.

Let’s dive into the story of Chiba Shrine. It began as Hokutosan Kongoju-ji. This was a Buddhist temple. Monk Kakusan founded it in the year 1000. He was the son of Taira no Tadatsune. The temple honored Emperor Ichijo’s recovery from an eye disease.

Fast forward to 1126. Taira no Tsuneshige moved his clan’s base. He went from Oji Castle to Mount Inohana. The clan’s Myoken shrine moved with them. It merged into the temple.

The Myoken Taisai festival began in 1127. The Chiba clan had just moved to Inohana Castle. This festival has continued for nine centuries. During the Genpei War, the Chiba clan sided with Minamoto no Yoritomo. Yoritomo visited the temple in 1180. The clan then received large domains. Myoken’s cult spread.

Years passed and the Chiba clan weakened. In 1455, Makuwari Yasutane overthrew the clan’s main branch. Inohana Castle was abandoned. The clan moved to Sakura. The coming-of-age ceremony still occurred at Kongoju-ji. This shows how important the temple was.

In 1591, Tokugawa Ieyasu donated land to Kongoju-ji. The temple gained the privilege of direct audience with the shogun. It then became known as Myoken-ji.

The Meiji government enforced separation of Buddhism and Shinto in 1869. The temple became Chiba Shrine. Its deity Myoken was reidentified as Ame-no-Minakanushi.

Chiba Shrine became a prefectural shrine in 1874. Fire destroyed the shrine that same year. It was rebuilt. Another fire struck in 1904. Reconstruction finished in 1914.

World War II brought more destruction. Bombing in 1945 ruined Chiba Shrine. It was rebuilt again. This time it finished in 1954.

The entire Chiba Shrine complex had a grand renovation in 1990. The Sonjodden gate was completed in 1998.

The shrine’s main deity is Ame-no-Minakanushi. He is also known as Hokushin Myoken Sonjo-o. Auxiliary deities include Futsunushi and Yamato Takeru.

The two-story haiden is unique. It was built in 1990. It is the first of its kind in Japan. The Kongodden and Hokutoden are open for worship. Chiba Tenjin is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane.

The Sonjodden is the main entrance. It serves as a sub-shrine to Ame-no-Minakanushi. The Fukutokuden is on the first floor. The Kaiunden is on the upper floor.

The Chozuya survived the 1945 bombing. Its stone basin dates from 1755.

Chiba Shrine has auxiliary shrines. These include Innai Katori Shrine and Uba Shrine. Hoshi Shrine and Ishi Shrine are also present. Inari Shrine and Kotohira Shrine add to the complex. Nishinomiya Shrine and Hachiman Shrine are branch shrines. Hie Shrine, Mitsumine Shrine and Shinmei Shrine also reside here. Ontake Shrine and Itsukushima Shrine complete the collection. Mizu-no-Miya is the newest shrine.

The Myoken Taisai is the main festival. It has been held since 1127. The Horen mikoshi is carried through the streets. It is deposited near the former Inohana Castle site. This festival is a cultural asset of Chiba Prefecture.

Chiba Shrine stands as a testament to time. It is a blend of Buddhism and Shintoism. It shows the history of the Chiba clan. It’s a place of resilience and faith.”
