In 1891, a sturdy pier emerged on the Delaware River, crafted by the visionary architect Robert E. Peary. Pier 1, originally intended for berthing and repair of ships, has witnessed a vibrant evolution throughout Philadelphia’s maritime history. Initially known as the Berthing and Repair Pier, Pier 1 quickly became a vital part of Philadelphia’s bustling waterfront. Its location made it a strategic point for naval operations. The pier’s robust construction, designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the river, also proved adaptable to changing needs over time. By 1919, another pier, later known as Cherry Street Pier, was built further south on the Delaware River. This new pier focused on the offloading of fruits and vegetables, highlighting the shift in riverfront activity from industrial use to commercial trade. This shift ultimately impacted Pier 1. As shipping gravitated towards areas better suited for large-scale cargo operations, Pier 1 took on a new role. Its sturdy structure, originally meant for ship repair, became ideal for storage. This marked a period of quieter service for Pier 1, even as other parts of the riverfront, like Cherry Street Pier, bustled with activity. The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation’s 2012 decision to repurpose Cherry Street Pier for artistic endeavors reveals the ongoing transformation of the Philadelphia waterfront. This focus on arts and culture speaks to the evolving identity of the city’s riverside, creating spaces where the public could engage with art and creativity. While Cherry Street Pier underwent its transformation into a vibrant artistic hub, Pier 1 maintained its historical significance. Today, recognized for its architectural and historical importance, Pier 1 stands as a testament to Philadelphia’s rich maritime past.
