“Center of the Universe” they call it. Wudaokou. A fitting name perhaps for a place that draws in students from around the globe. This vibrant neighborhood in Beijing’s Haidian District pulses with a unique energy. It’s a place where the traditional meets the ultra-modern. Hutongs once dominated the landscape. Now sleek apartments and tech parks stand tall.
Wudaokou’s story begins with the Jingbao Railway. Its name literally translates to “Fifth Crossing”. This railway crossing defined the area for years. Then came the universities. Tsinghua University and Peking University drew in students. These institutions fueled Wudaokou’s transformation into a commercial hub in the 1950s.
The area boomed. It became a haven for international students. Many Koreans settled here making Wudaokou a sort of Koreatown. You can see that influence today. Chengfu Road the main thoroughfare struggles with traffic. This is especially true because it’s the only road connecting the east and west sides of Wudaokou. However things have improved since the Beijing-Zhangjiakou intercity railway project. This project eliminated the level crossing. That original railway crossing which gave Wudaokou its name.
Wudaokou’s evolution continues. It remains a captivating blend of old and new. It’s a microcosm of Beijing itself a place where East meets West. A place where tradition and modernity coexist.
