Did you ever hear of a school that won a national award and produced a state champion writer, a Hollywood actor, and a notorious criminal? Right here at McCollum High School, that unlikely mix is part of its vibrant history. McCollum High School opened its doors in September 1962. It was named after Dillard McCollum, a dedicated educator who served the community as a student, teacher, principal, and superintendent for over two decades. McCollum wasn’t just about academics. The school is also home to the Cowboys, fierce rivals of the Harlandale Indians in the annual Frontier Bowl, a football tradition spanning over 50 years. In 1972, McCollum High School achieved national recognition, winning the prestigious Bellamy Award. This award rotates among states every 50 years, making McCollum’s achievement even more remarkable. A few years later, in 1976, the McCollum Cowboys volleyball team spiked their way to a 4A State Championship title. The school’s talent extended beyond the playing field. In 1992, student Clifton Bennett showcased his writing prowess by winning the state championship in editorial writing. McCollum High School’s alumni list boasts a diverse range of figures. Jonathan Joss, class of 1983, became a successful actor, lending his voice to the beloved animated series “King of the Hill.” Emilio Navaira, class of 1980, made his mark in the music world, performing both country and Tejano music. Sadly, the school’s history also includes a dark chapter. Yolanda Saldívar, class of 1979, was convicted of the murder of Tejano music star Selena. Today, McCollum High School continues to nurture young minds and foster a vibrant community. The school’s Cowboy Band and Color Guard have gained recognition, even going viral with their Fiesta performance of “El Baile de la Gorila” in 2017. They’ve also swept the TECA State Championships in recent years. With a diverse range of clubs, from Cyber Security to Anime, and a dedication to both academics and athletics, McCollum High School carries its unique legacy into the future.
