Established in 1954 Greater Cornerstone Baptist Church has a rich history. It began as a small mission with 30 people. Reverend John W Woods led the congregation. He served for over four decades. The church moved several times. Each move reflected its growth and the challenges of urban renewal in Newark New Jersey. Initially housed in a Masonic hall the church eventually found a home at 95 South Orange Avenue. Later it relocated to 584 High Street then to 294 Orange Street. Finally in 1962 it settled at 428 Central Avenue. This wasn’t the end of their journey. Redevelopment forced another move in 1976. The church then occupied 115-119 West Market Street. Despite hardships like struggling to maintain heat and air conditioning the church thrived. Members fundraised through dinners and fashion shows. They persevered in their faith. Their next move brought them to their current location. This is 235-237 North 18th Street. Services started here on March 5 1989. The church overcame many obstacles. Reverend Woods’s dedication created a lasting legacy. After his passing in 1994 the church faced more challenges. A new pastor Reverend Niles R Wilson was appointed. He led extensive renovations. The church paid off its mortgage in 1999. Further improvements were made to enhance the building and its ministries. Greater Cornerstone Baptist Church’s story is one of perseverance faith and remarkable community spirit. It shows the enduring strength of a congregation. Their story stands as a testament to their unwavering belief. This building is a landmark. It represents the faith and resilience of the Greater Cornerstone Baptist Church family.
