This refers to a patron saint of a local church. Adonorigo lived in the 12th century. This may not be obvious but is a compelling fact about this place.
The area’s story stretches back further. Well into prehistory. Though the first written record appears much later. In 1072. It mentions a monastery dedicated to Sao Salvador. This early record highlights Vilar de Andorinho’s religious importance.
A significant event in Vilar de Andorinho’s history involves a fierce dispute. It was between the See of Porto and the Monastery of Pedroso. They fought over the patronage of this monastery. This conflict even led to the murder of the religious figure Andorinho. This murder was at the hands of Goncalo Barrico. Goncalo was one of the church’s heirs. The incident was pivotal in giving the parish its final name. Bishop Juliao of Porto settled the dispute in 1256. He ruled in favor of the Monastery of Pedroso. The monastery held the patronage until 1496 when it passed to the Monastery of Santa Clara do Porto.
Vilar de Andorinho remained primarily a rural parish. Prosperous farming and milling families thrived. Grain milling was its main economic activity. Proximity to Porto ensured efficient transport of goods. This improved the local population’s quality of life. Onion cultivation flourished later. Lasting into the early 20th century. It earned the inhabitants the nickname “ceboleiros” reflected in the parish’s coat of arms.
The parish abounds in historical sites. Including stately manor houses. This has led to the annual Medieval Fair of Vilar de Andorinho. It takes place in the iconic Quinta Condes de Pacos Vitorino. This fair grows each year becoming Vilar de Andorinho’s leading event.
