Picture this A simple wooden structure stands on the corner of 42nd and Polk Avenues. It’s August 15 1911. The first Mass is celebrated at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church. The seats are planks on trestles a far cry from the grandeur to come. This humble beginning marks the birth of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish a testament to faith and community.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church wasn’t always located here on Marlborough Avenue. Its story begins much earlier a testament to the growth of East San Diego. Initially a small church it expanded in 1920. The parish then moved its church and rectory to 42nd and Orange Avenues. The building was remodeled to showcase a Spanish facade a beautiful aesthetic touch.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School opened its doors in 1927. It was located at the corner of Forty-Second Street and Orange Avenue under Pastor Fr Joseph Lynn. This school became an integral part of the parish’s growth and community involvement.
By the late 1940s Our Lady of the Sacred Heart needed a larger church. A groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 31 1947 the Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Msgr Hannon oversaw the construction of the present building. He personally guided the furnishing of the church from the altar to the stained-glass windows to the tabernacle. The new church was dedicated on Thanksgiving Day in 1948.
Rosary High School opened the same year. Though not officially part of the parish it was closely intertwined with parish life. Later the Rosary High School building became the parish grade school. Guadalupe Plaza a senior citizen high-rise replaced the old school and convent in 1982.
Throughout its history Our Lady of the Sacred Heart has embraced diversity. In 1989 Fr Khing Vano reflected on the parish’s multicultural congregation. People from various backgrounds Anglo Mexican Vietnamese Afro-American came together in unity of faith.
The parish’s commitment to social action is evident. Shrines to Our Lady of Guadalupe and the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs were dedicated in 1991. The dedication was hugely popular requiring reservations due to high attendance.
Through various renovations and changes in leadership Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church has persevered. From its humble beginnings to its current state it stands as a beacon of faith and community. This church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of its parishioners their faith their dedication and their shared history. It’s a story woven into the very fabric of this community a story you can almost feel as you stand here today.
