Dedicated to Saint Spiridon the Miracle-worker. This church stands as a testament to faith. Our Church “St. Spiridon of the Stadium” is an important landmark in Athens. It is also known as “St. Spiridon of Pangrati”. That’s because it is near the Panathenaic Stadium and in the Pangrati area. In the early 20th century, people called the area “Frog Island”. So the church was once known as “St. Spiridon of Frog Island”.
Let’s delve into its history. The cornerstone of Saint Spiridon church was laid in 1903. This site once held a smaller church. It was dedicated to both Saint Spiridon and Saint Anthony.
The original plans were by the architect Tsiller. But these plans saw revisions before construction ended. The church’s construction faced delays. These were mainly due to financial problems during the World Wars. The Greek Civil War also caused damage to Saint Spiridon church.
Renovations took place between 1985 and 1990. Workers repaired the exterior and interior. They also installed a new marble floor. The murals inside Saint Spiridon church were completed. The Parish Hall and other rooms were built in 1961.
Saint Spiridon church boasts a Byzantine architectural style with a dome. It covers an area of 466 square meters. The dome reaches a height of 25 meters. Constantinos Kotsis started the murals in the 1950s. Panagiotis and Alexandros Batas finished them in the 1990s.
