A crescent moon gleams atop the spire. This is the Shri Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir in Connaught Place Delhi. It’s more than just a temple. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and a unique blend of cultures.

Legend says this Hanuman temple is among five built by the Pandavas after their victory at Kurukshetra. The deity here is Bala Hanuman Hanuman as a child. His idol faces south. Devotees see only one eye. A mace is in his left hand. His right hand rests on his chest in prayer.

The temple’s history intertwines with that of Delhi itself. Built originally perhaps by Maharaja Man Singh I it was reconstructed by Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1724. The Mughal Emperor Akbar is said to have gifted the unique crescent moon finial that tops the spire. This symbol may have protected the temple during times of religious conflict.

Tulsidas the author of the Ramacharitamanas and the Hanuman Chalisa is believed to have visited this sacred site. He may have drawn inspiration from this very place. The temple’s walls whisper stories of devotion. The silver doors are engraved with scenes from the Ramayana. Paintings of Hanuman adorn the walls. Below each is the full text of Tulsidas’s Sundar Kand.

The Shri Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir is more than just a place of worship. It’s a hub of religious activity. The NDMC expanded the complex. Now it includes shrines to Shiva Parvati Durga Lakshmi Narayan Ganesha and Santoshi Mata. The continuous chanting of “Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram” since 1964 is even recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
