What if these halls could talk? They would tell tales of innovation born within Yonsei University College of Medicine. They would tell stories of dedication etched into its very foundation.

Welcome to Yonsei University College of Medicine. It is a cornerstone of medical education in South Korea. Its roots go back to the late 19th century. Its contributions have shaped healthcare for generations.

Our story begins in April 1885. The first modern hospital practicing Western medicine in Korea was established. It was named Gwanghyewon meaning House of Extended Grace. Horace Newton Allen founded it. He was an American Protestant missionary. The Presbyterian Church in the USA sent him to Korea. This humble beginning marked a turning point.

Just days later the hospital was renamed Chejungwon. This means House of Universal Helpfulness. It reflected the institution’s growing mission. Financial support initially came from the Korean government. Medical staff were provided by the church.

However, political changes caused the government to withdraw funding. Management of Chejungwon then fully fell to the church in 1894. Oliver R. Avison stepped in to lead Chejungwon in 1893. He was a Canadian.

Avison sought further support in the United States. He shared the medical project’s vision at a missionary conference in New York City. Louis Severance a businessman and philanthropist was deeply moved. He donated a major portion of the construction costs for new medical buildings. In honor of this generosity, Chejungwon was renamed Severance Hospital.

Severance Hospital’s role extended beyond treatment. It embraced medical education. In 1886 the hospital admitted its first class of 16 medical students. These students were selected through rigorous examinations. By 1899 Chejungwon Medical School was officially recognized.

Collaboration grew. Different missionary denominations joined forces. In 1912 Chejungwon began receiving support from the Union Council of Korean Missionaries. Consequently, the medical school was renamed Severance Union Medical College in 1913.

This college stands as a testament to collaboration and innovation. It has trained countless medical professionals. It has advanced healthcare practices in Korea.

In January 1957 Severance Union Medical College joined with Yonhi College. The name Yonsei came from combining parts of each name. Yonsei continues to uphold a legacy. It offers education, research, and service to the community. Its graduates include a Nobel laureate and an Academy Award winner.

As you stand here at Yonsei University College of Medicine imagine the legacy. Think of the countless lives touched by the work done within these walls. Consider the future of medicine being shaped by the students who walk these halls today. The truth will set you free. This motto guides the pursuit of knowledge and service that defines Yonsei.
