A majestic structure stands before you. This is the Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church in Astoria. Its beauty is a testament to the unwavering faith of Ukrainian immigrants. They built this house of God brick by brick.
The Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church is more than just a building. It’s a living monument to a vibrant community. Its story begins long before its current majestic form. Early Ukrainian settlers in Astoria initially lacked a dedicated parish. They attended services elsewhere. This changed in 1944. The Basilian Fathers purchased Castle Hall. Parishioners transformed the upper floor into a temporary church. This marked the humble beginning of Holy Cross Parish.
October 22nd 1944 was a pivotal day. Very Reverend W Lotowycz led the first High Mass. Reverend Sylvester Kollar became the first pastor. He worked tirelessly. His goal was to unite the scattered Ukrainian Catholic community. The Sacred Heart League started a parish bulletin. This helped build community spirit. The church choir formed in 1951. Reverend Father Jerome Barnych a son of Astoria led the first mass for the choir. The Catholic War Veterans Post 1619 also played an important role. They organized events for children. Concerts dances outings and picnics kept everyone in the Ukrainian spirit.
The parish grew rapidly. A new church building became a necessity. The decision was made to build a new church. Mr Apollinare Osadca designed the new church and rectory. J Baranello and Sons of Ozone Park won the building contract. Groundbreaking took place on June 11th 1964. The cornerstone was blessed on August 1st 1965. The church finally opened for services on June 18th 1967. The official dedication followed on May 19th 1968. A parade solemn services a banquet and a journal marked this momentous occasion.
The new Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church was a marvel. Master artists created its beauty. Maestro Jaroslaw Baransky and his team painted the icons. They also created stained glass windows indoor and outdoor mosaics and mosaic tablets. Master woodcarver Stanley Kira crafted the altars tabernacle iconostasis candelabra and other wooden furnishings. Gold chandeliers arrived from Athens. The dedication of the new church was a significant event. Many dignitaries attended. Both religious and secular leaders celebrated the community’s achievement.
