“Let’s step back in time to 1954.” That’s when Narashino City’s Mimomi Elementary School was separated. It became the independent entity we now know as Narashino Municipal Jitsumi Elementary School.

Narashino Municipal Jitsumi Elementary School stands as a testament to community and education. This public elementary school is located in Narashino, Chiba Prefecture. Specifically, you’ll find it in Jitsumi 1-chome.

Initially, Narashino Municipal Jitsumi Elementary School shared grounds. It was within the Chiba City Makuhari East Elementary School. In March 1955, it moved to its current location. That same year saw new construction. A two-story wooden school building was erected.

But let’s rewind further. Educational roots in this area stretch back to the Meiji era. The Meiji period marked a transformative time for education in Japan. In 1872, the government issued the “Gakusei”. This was the Education System Order. It aimed to establish a modern, national education system. Schools began popping up across the country.

The forerunners of today’s elementary schools were often small. Some were even housed in former temple buildings. Imagine classrooms with just 50 or so students. A single teacher or perhaps two would guide their learning. These early schools relied on the community.

Operating these schools required funding. Students paid tuition. Local communities often covered any shortfall. In some cases, villagers cultivated school fields. They would then donate the proceeds. Other communities created funds. They lent money and used the interest to support school operations. This strong local support highlights the community’s commitment to education.

By 1908, a shift occurred. Smaller schools consolidated. The town of Tsudanuma merged five elementary schools. They formed Tsudanuma Jinjo Higher Elementary School. It had around 1,000 students. A new school building was constructed near Tsudanuma Station in 1910. This construction cost was substantial. It represented about three-quarters of the town’s annual budget.

However, consolidation faced resistance. In the Kuma Swamp area, residents protested the merger. They declared their opposition. Despite their efforts, Kuma Swamp Elementary School closed.

Tsudanuma Jinjo Higher Elementary School became the only elementary school. It was within Tsudanuma. Many schools later became independent from it. In that sense, Tsudanuma Jinjo Higher Elementary School was the “mother school” of Narashino.

Narashino Municipal Jitsumi Elementary School carries this legacy forward. Today, it continues to serve its community. It provides education to the children of Jitsumi. A reminder of the long journey of education in this region. From small temple schools to modern institutions. It showcases the enduring importance of local support.
