A haven of peace stands before us. This is the Caritas Altenzentrum St Hubertusstift in Dusseldorf. Its history whispers tales of centuries past.

The St Hubertusstift’s story begins long ago. In fact its roots stretch back to the 14th century. Initially known as the St Anna Hospital it served the sick near the Kreuzherrenkirche. Over time the hospital moved. It eventually found a new home in a Baroque-style building constructed between 1709 and 1712. Architect Jacob Dubois designed this impressive structure. It was originally more than just a hospital. It included a synagogue and a school. This building was later acquired by the Hubertus Order in 1772.

The Hubertus Order continued the tradition of care. However the hospital faced many challenges. After the French occupation it lost significant funds. It had to reduce the number of patients it could care for. Later the hospital was renamed the Max-Joseph Hospital. This name was short-lived. It reverted to its original name following changes in the political landscape.

The hospital’s function changed in the mid-1800s. The establishment of a new Catholic hospital in Dusseldorf rendered it redundant. In 1863 the building was transformed. It became a Catholic care home for the elderly. The Christenserinnen Sisters took on the responsibility for its residents. A convent and chapel were added on Hubertusstrasse.

The St Hubertusstift has seen periods of growth and devastation. World War II caused substantial damage. However the building was restored in multiple stages after the war. Today the Caritas Altenzentrum St Hubertusstift stands as a testament to resilience and compassion. It is a modern facility combining comfort with its rich history. It provides high quality care for its residents. They enjoy various amenities including a garden a chapel and a new wellness bath. The St Hubertusstift continues its mission of caring for the elderly. It is a place where tradition and modern care meet. It is a symbol of Dusseldorf’s history and its commitment to its senior citizens.
