Opened in 1956, Jenkins High School has been a cornerstone of Savannah’s community for generations. The school, officially known as Herschel Vespasian Jenkins High School, is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the power of education and community spirit. Jenkins High School has witnessed the changing tides of Savannah, nurturing countless students within its walls. Located on East Derenne Avenue, the school has always been a hub of activity. It draws students not just from its immediate neighborhood, but from across Chatham County, thanks to its renowned Honors Academy for Academic Excellence. For decades, the original building served its purpose. It provided a space where young minds could explore, learn, and grow. Then, in the summer of 2019, a new chapter began. The old building, steeped in history, was carefully demolished. In its place, a state-of-the-art facility rose. This new Jenkins High School opened its doors in 2021, ready to continue its legacy of excellence. The modern design incorporates everything a 21st-century student needs. There are cutting-edge science labs, collaborative learning spaces, and even a dedicated wing for the Coastal Georgia Comprehensive Academy. Imagine students engaging in robotics competitions in the engineering labs, or rehearsing for a play in the 600-seat auditorium. The spirit of Jenkins High School isn’t just confined to academics. It extends to the athletic fields, where the Warriors compete. The school boasts a competition gym, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, and a football field complete with a track. From its Blue Ribbon School recognition in 1997 to its new, modern campus, Jenkins High School continues to strive for excellence.
