In 1958, the Huntington Park Christian Church congregation took a leap of faith. They moved to their current location at 1207 Main St. Many questioned the move. It seemed too far out of town. Their previous sanctuary, nestled at the corner of 8th Street and Orange Avenue, had been their home since 1910. But their pastor, Everett Auger, a man with a vision, rallied the congregation with a powerful message: “Hats off to the past, but coats off to the future!” Huntington Park Christian Church was growing, outgrowing its old space. The sale of the initially planned property on Lake Street provided the funds to purchase the land on Main Street for $17,500. The construction of the new sanctuary was a significant undertaking, costing $105,000. Auger, born in Saskatchewan in 1911, had a long and fascinating journey before leading the Huntington Park Christian Church. He moved to Los Angeles with his family after a fire destroyed their town. He studied at Pacific Bible Seminary, even crossing paths with a future Huntington Park Christian Church pastor, James G. Hurst, who served as the seminary’s president. Auger met his wife, Doris Moody, in 1931, and they married in 1934. He pastored a church in South Gate for 14 years, growing its membership to over 300. Then, in 1954, he received the call to Huntington Park Christian Church, then known as the First Church of Christ of Huntington Beach. His first sermon, titled “Work and Expectancy of the Minister,” marked the beginning of his era. The Augers settled into the community, living on 2nd Street and later on Palm Avenue. Auger’s leadership guided the church through a period of significant transition and growth. Eventually, he left Huntington Beach to found a church in Westminster. Though he is no longer with us, Auger’s legacy continues to resonate within the walls of the Huntington Park Christian Church. He championed the future, and his vision helped shape the church into what it is today.
