Lakshmi Niwas Birla, a name synonymous with industry and philanthropy, had a vision. This vision took shape on July 11, 1941, with the founding of Birla High School. Originally called Hindi High School, this institution stands as a testament to Birla’s commitment to education. Birla High School in Kolkata wasn’t just another school. It was meant to be a beacon of knowledge. The school’s motto, “Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamay,” meaning “Lead Us From Darkness To Light,” encapsulates this aspiration. In 1997, the school officially adopted the name Birla High School, solidifying its connection to its founder’s legacy. The school has grown significantly over the years, yet it remains anchored to its initial principles established by the Vidya Mandir Society. Interestingly, during World War II, the school building at Ballygunge Circular Road had to be temporarily relinquished. The British government requisitioned it for military purposes after the Japanese entered the war. This disruption, however, did not diminish the school’s spirit. It reopened in a rented building at 1/1B, Lower Circular Road in 1947. The reopening ceremony was graced by the presence of C. Rajagopalachari, a prominent Indian statesman. Birla High School is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education. It offers a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on both academics and extracurricular activities. Over the years, it has produced countless successful alumni who have made significant contributions to various fields. As you stand before Birla High School, take a moment to appreciate its rich history and the enduring vision of its founder.
