Heard about the “noodle sculpture” near I-25? That is Articulated Wall. This towering yellow artwork has become a Denver landmark. Herbert Bayer created it. He finished this commission in 1985 just before he passed away.

Articulated Wall stands 85 feet tall. It is made of 33 concrete slabs slightly askew. An aircraft carrier refueling mast runs down the center holding it all together.

People see many things in Articulated Wall. Some say it looks like bow-tie pasta. Others think it resembles French fries or cheese sticks. It all depends on your viewpoint and hunger.

Bayer knew people would see his sculpture from speeding cars. He designed it to change shape as you drive by. He felt the highway was worthy of an artist’s attention.

The original Articulated Wall is in Mexico City. Bayer designed that one for the 1968 Olympics. The Denver Design District commissioned the look-alike. It’s a bit shorter than the Mexico City version.

The Denver Art Museum owns Articulated Wall. It technically sits on private property. The Denver Design District allows people to view it up close.

Herbert Bayer was a Bauhaus master. He integrated art architecture and design. Aspen Colorado embodies his Bauhaus dream. He designed many aspects of the town.

The Denver Art Museum has a Herbert Bayer archive. It includes letters journals and photos. The Denver Public Library makes these materials accessible. This helps people understand Bayer’s work beyond Articulated Wall.

Koko Bayer Herbert Bayer’s step-granddaughter wants people to know the sculpture’s real name. She hopes people stop calling it “French fries.”

Another Herbert Bayer sculpture now stands at Alameda Station. It’s called Four Chromatic Gates. It brings Bayer’s vision to life. It also highlights Articulated Wall.

Articulated Wall is a testament to Bayer’s genius. It is a landmark that sparks conversation. It stands as a reminder of art’s impact on our everyday lives.
