Calvary-Saint Augistine Episcopal Church

Why did two Philadelphia churches decide to become one? The story of Calvary-Saint Augustine Episcopal Church is one of unity, resilience, and a commitment to community. Right here, in the Belmont section of Philadelphia, stands a testament to the power of faith and collaboration. Calvary-Saint Augustine Episcopal Church wasn’t always a single entity. It began as two separate congregations: Calvary Episcopal Church in Northern Liberties and St. Augustine Church of the Covenant. In 2008, after much prayer and thoughtful consideration, these two churches began to explore the possibility of merging. They saw the potential for a stronger, more vibrant community by combining their resources and their faith. On January 4, 2009, the vestries of both churches met to finalize the details, a significant step towards the creation of Calvary-Saint Augustine. The first joint service of Calvary Episcopal and St. Augustine took place on February 15, 2009. This marked a new chapter in the lives of both congregations. They were careful to preserve their unique histories and traditions, weaving them together to create a richer tapestry of faith. Just a few weeks later, on March 8, 2009, they officially adopted the name Calvary-Saint Augustine Episcopal Church. The Reverend George O. Master, II and the Reverend Renee McKenzie-Hayward co-officiated the services, symbolizing the unity of the two congregations. Reverend McKenzie-Hayward continued to guide Calvary-Saint Augustine, nurturing its growth through community programs and various ministries. She fostered a spirit of hope and joy until she was called to serve at the Church of the Advocate in 2011. In November 2011, Reverend Isaac Miller came out of retirement to serve as Interim Rector. He worked alongside the vestry and the congregation to further strengthen the church’s connection to its community. Calvary-Saint Augustine Episcopal Church stands as a beacon of faith, born from the union of two distinct congregations. Their story is a reminder that sometimes, the greatest strength comes from joining together, sharing our traditions, and working towards a common purpose.
