Time slipped away unnoticed. Centuries melted into each other. The Baofeng Temple stood sentinel. Its history a silent testament.
Baofeng Temple wasn’t always Baofeng Temple. It began life as Laitan Temple. Later it became known as Falin Temple. Even Shimen Ancient Temple was used. It’s a significant place for Mazu Daoyi’s followers. Mazu himself visited many times from 785 AD onward.
Construction started during the Tang Dynasty. A monk named Shuilian and his disciple Zen Master Daotong built the first structures. This was around 742-756 AD. Then came a pivotal moment. In 850 AD Emperor Xuanzong bestowed the name Baofeng Temple. The name stuck. It’s still used today.
The temple’s design is classic Buddhist style. A grand 13-meter-high archway marks the entrance. Inside you find the work of skilled artisans. Zhao Puchu’s calligraphy graces the Efang. A thoughtful couplet by Yicheng Elder decorates the columns. A serene half-moon-shaped pool adds to the peaceful atmosphere.
Four main halls form the heart of Baofeng Temple. The Shanmen Temple leads the way. The Heavenly King Hall follows. Flanked by Xuhuai and Yunhai Buildings. Then comes the Daxiong Hall. This is the main building. It sits on the site of an ancient imperial pavilion. It covers a vast 1100 square meters. Hundreds of monks once chanted here. Three giant Buddha statues stand within. Sakyamuni Amitabha and Medicine Buddha preside. The hall’s walls are adorned with 500 arhats. Their expressions a captivating mix of joy anger sorrow and peace.
Beyond the main hall lie wing rooms and halls. Bell towers guest rooms and a merit hall. All buildings had verandas. This is a practical design. It kept monks dry during rainy seasons.
The temple’s most prized possession? The Matsu Pagoda. It’s a relic tower dedicated to Mazu Daoyi. Built during the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt in the Song Dynasty. It was damaged during troubled times. But it was beautifully restored in 1993. Made of white marble from Shandong. Calligrapher Qi Gong’s inscription adds prestige. The tower stands proudly. A testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of Baofeng Temple.
The temple grounds are beautifully landscaped. Ancient cypress trees provide shade. Flower beds add bursts of color. It’s a truly tranquil setting. A place for reflection prayer and a glimpse into a rich and compelling history. Today Baofeng Temple is both a sacred space and a popular tourist destination. A place where the past and present converge.
