“Bevern,” I say. It’s a name that echoes through the centuries. Bevern is a municipality nestled in the district of Pinneberg. This is Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Are you ready to explore its history?

Bevern’s story begins long ago. The first documented mention of Bevern was in 1564. That’s over 450 years of history. The name “Bevern” may come from the word “bewern”. In old language, this meant “to tremble”. This may describe an overgrown swamp. Another theory connects the name to the Low German word “Bever”. “Bever” means beaver.

Bevern owes its name to beavers. They once thrived in the local moorlands. These creatures left their mark on the land and its name. The community’s coat of arms even features a beaver.

Look closely at the coat of arms. It is a silver shield. A green hill sits at the base. A silver wave runs across the hill. A black beaver stands on the hill. The beaver faces left. It is half-upright. The wave represents the Bredenmoorbek stream. This stream flows through Bevern. It crosses from east to west. The beaver is a visual pun. In Low German, beaver is “Bever”. This makes it a “talking” coat of arms.

Bevern is a small community. Its area covers about 8 square kilometers. The population is just over 600 people. Despite its size, Bevern has strong ties to other communities. Since 1986, Bevern has partnerships. These partnerships are with Bevern in Lower Saxony. They are also with two other places. These are Bevern near Bremervörde and Bevern near Essen.

Bevern lies about 5 kilometers east of Elmshorn. It is about 4 kilometers south of Barmstedt. The Ekholter Au stream flows through Bevern. The A23 motorway passes to the west. This connects Hamburg and Elmshorn.

In 2023, local elections took place. All nine seats went to the Bürgerliche Wählergemeinschaft Bevern. Voter participation was at 63.4%. This shows strong local engagement.

Bevern may be small. However, it has a rich history and unique identity. From its name’s possible origins to its beaver coat of arms. Bevern reflects its connection to the land. It also reflects its community spirit. Take a moment to appreciate this charming municipality. Bevern offers a glimpse into rural Schleswig-Holstein.
