“Tenka muteki hisshori un.” This phrase translates to “Tenka muteki hisshori un”. It is written on a plaque gifted to Reikoden-tenmangu Shrine. The gift was from Emperor Gouda. Today we explore this unique village shrine. Reikoden-tenmangu Shrine stands in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto. It is dedicated to Tenjin-shinko Faith. This faith reveres Sugawara no Michizane. Ieyasu Tokugawa is also enshrined here.
Let’s step back to 1018. Yoshisato Sugawara, a descendant of Michizane, built a sacred place. It was located in Kawachi Province. The shrine’s name comes from a legend. When Michizane was exiled, Tenichi jin descended. This god came with a streak of light.
During the Mongol Invasion, Emperor Gouda sought divine help. He ordered prayers at Reikoden-tenmangu Shrine. Miraculously, Yuan ships sank. The Emperor then presented the “Tenka muteki hisshori un” plaque.
The Onin Rebellion brought misfortune. Reikoden-tenmangu Shrine lost its land. It was moved to To-ji Temple’s grounds. Later in the Edo period, the Wakae family returned. They were Shinto priests. They rebuilt the shrine in Tonodan. In 1761, it was enshrined at this current location.
Ieyasu Tokugawa held the shrine in high regard. In 1570, he prayed for peace. He also supported the Wakae family. After Ieyasu’s death, Iemitsu Tokugawa honored him. In 1636, he moved Ieyasu’s statue here. It came from the Sento-gosho Imperial Palace. It became an enshrined deity.
The present main building has an interesting story. In 1872, it was moved. It was reconstructed from the Konoe family’s old chinju-sha shrine. This was a Shinto shrine on Buddhist temple grounds. It was dedicated to the area’s tutelary deity.
Reikoden-tenmangu Shrine may be small. It is deeply rooted in the community. Locals view it as their town’s shrine. Before Hideyoshi’s urban reforms, many temples stood here. They were near the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Only Reikoden-tenmangu Shrine remained.
Here at Reikoden-tenmangu Shrine, Sugawara no Michizane is not the only deity. Ieyasu Tokugawa is also enshrined. Tokugawa worked hard to revive the Wakae family.
Notice the stone monument. It commemorates Sugawara’s millennium. Reikoden-tenmangu Shrine is a village shrine. It is a testament to faith. It embodies resilience. It connects to powerful figures in Japanese history.
