From the heart of Nanzenji Temple, a curious tale emerges. Nanzenji 4, a boundary stone, stands as a silent witness to centuries of history. This stone, seemingly insignificant, marks a line between the sacred and the secular. Nanzenji Temple itself began not as a temple, but as Emperor Kameyama’s retirement villa in the 13th century. Imagine the emperor, strolling through these very grounds, seeking tranquility amidst nature’s embrace. Later, inspired by the Zen priest Fumon, Kameyama transformed his villa into Nanzenji Temple.

Nanzenji Temple became a prominent Zen temple, head of its own Rinzai Zen branch. The temple’s grounds, sprawling across ten hectares at the base of Kyoto’s Higashiyama mountains, are a testament to its importance. However, like many historical sites, Nanzenji faced its share of trials. Destroyed multiple times by fires and wars, the temple was persistently rebuilt, showcasing the resilience of its spirit. The Sanmon gate, towering over the treetops, offers a panoramic view of Kyoto. This very gate played a pivotal role in a famous Kabuki play, Sanmon Gosan no Kiri, further cementing its place in Japanese culture.

The Hojo, the former head priest’s residence, houses a renowned rock garden. These carefully arranged rocks resemble tigers and cubs navigating a watery landscape. The aqueduct, a striking brick structure cutting through the temple grounds, tells a different story. Built during the Meiji Period, it was part of a canal system connecting Kyoto to Lake Biwa. This juxtaposition of the ancient and the modern adds a unique dimension to Nanzenji. Several sub-temples dot the complex. Nanzenin Temple, located on the site of Emperor Kameyama’s original villa, includes a mausoleum and a serene pond garden. Konchi-in Temple features a variety of buildings, gardens, and even a small Toshogu Shrine. Tenjuan Temple is known for its two gardens, particularly stunning during the autumn illuminations.

Nanzenji 4, this simple boundary stone, is a tangible link to this rich history. It whispers stories of emperors, monks, and the enduring power of Zen Buddhism. As you stand here, at Nanzenji 4, take a moment to appreciate the layers of time embedded in this sacred space. The rustling leaves, the gentle breeze, the scent of incense, all carry echoes of the past. Nanzenji 4 is more than just a marker. It is a portal to the heart of Nanzenji Temple.
