Have you ever wondered about the story behind this beautiful church? This is the Pfarrkirche Hof, a landmark in Hof bei Salzburg. Its history is one of faith, fire, and rebirth.
The Pfarrkirche Hof was first mentioned in 1502. Back then, it was a subsidiary church of Thalgau. Citizens of Salzburg built the original church in 1515. They chose a Gothic style for this house of worship.
In 1785, Pfarrkirche Hof became a vicariate. This meant it was a local chaplaincy but still under Thalgau’s authority. It wasn’t until 1858 that Hof became its own parish. This marked a new chapter for the church and its community.
Tragedy struck on August 4, 1859. A lightning strike caused a fire that destroyed the Pfarrkirche Hof. The blaze consumed much of the church and surrounding buildings. It was a devastating blow to the town.
But the community was resilient. After 1862, they began rebuilding the Pfarrkirche Hof. It took many years of hard work and dedication. Finally, on October 12, 1878, the rebuilt church was consecrated.
The rebuilt Pfarrkirche Hof stands in the neogothic style. The tower was rebuilt. Instead of an onion dome, it received an octagonal pyramid by Hofzimmermeister Peter Huber. The tower rises 38 meters into the sky.
The Pfarrkirche Hof is dedicated to Saint Sebastian. He was a Roman soldier martyred for his Christian faith. Saint Sebastian is often depicted with arrows. His feast day is celebrated on January 20.
Inside the Pfarrkirche Hof, you’ll find impressive features. The high altar, created in 1862, showcases Saint Sebastian with angels. Statues of Saints Florian and George flank him. Above, you’ll see Saint Roch and Saint Leonhard. A statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus sits at the very top.
The left side altar, crafted in 1873, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. She stands surrounded by Saint Rupert and Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia. The tabernacle holds a nativity scene from 1888. It was carved by Franz Schmalzl.
The right side altar, dating back to 1890, honors Saint Joseph. Statues of Saints Peter and Paul stand beside him. In the upper niche is Saint Anthony of Padua. The pulpit features reliefs of the four evangelists. Joseph Stumpf from Kufstein created both the altar’s structure and the pulpit.
Franz Wesenauer, a local sculptor, created the statue of Saint Cecilia. He also restored the old statue of Saint Barbara. These stand on the gallery near the organ pipes. The Stations of the Cross, dating from 1867, are by various masters from Salzburg and Seekirchen.
The Pfarrkirche Hof’s gothic portal from 1506 is particularly striking. It’s made of Adnet marble. The gable displays a relief of Saint Sebastian, Saint Leonhard, and Saint Barbara. The coat of arms of the Kirchpüchler family is also visible.
The Pfarrkirche Hof has undergone many renovations. In 2008, the parish celebrated its 150th anniversary. At that time, the church completed a general restoration. Today, it shines in its original splendor.
