The Keeper’s Dwelling stands proudly on Little Brewster Island. It’s a sturdy brick structure. It’s a silent witness to centuries of maritime history.

This Keeper’s Dwelling isn’t just a house. It’s part of the Boston Light station. Boston Light is the oldest continually used light station in the United States. The original lighthouse was built in 1716. It was a circular rubblestone tower about 60 feet high. A keeper’s house barn and wharf were also constructed.

The Keeper’s Dwelling we see today wasn’t the first. The original structure and its first two keepers met tragic ends. The first keeper George Worthylake his wife Ann and daughter Ruth drowned in 1718. Their canoe capsized. Their deaths shocked Boston. A young Benjamin Franklin even wrote a poem about it. The second keeper also drowned shortly after taking the position.

The American Revolution dramatically impacted the Keeper’s Dwelling and the Boston Light. Patriots burned the wooden parts of the tower to prevent the British from using it. The British rebuilt it. The Americans burned it again. Finally the British blew it up in 1776. A new lighthouse and a new Keeper’s Dwelling were constructed in 1783.

Over the years many improvements were made to the Boston Light station. The Keeper’s Dwelling has changed too. A second keeper’s house was added in 1885. It provided additional space for the growing number of keepers and their families. The fog signal was upgraded multiple times. A brick building now houses a generator.

In 1948 Boston Light was electrified. This modernized many aspects of life on the island. Indoor plumbing was finally installed in the Keeper’s Dwelling in 1960. This was a significant improvement to the living conditions.

In 1964 Boston Light became a National Historic Landmark. A law passed in 1989 ensured that Boston Light would remain permanently manned. It became the only manned lighthouse in the US. The light was automated in 1998. The Keeper’s Dwelling continues to play a crucial role in preserving this important piece of American history. Dr Sally Snowman served as the last official keeper retiring in 2023. She was the first civilian keeper since 1941 and the first female keeper.

The Keeper’s Dwelling on Little Brewster Island is more than just a building. It’s a testament to resilience. It’s a symbol of the enduring human spirit. It’s a living museum of maritime history. It tells a story of dedication perseverance and the ongoing preservation of a national treasure. This Keeper’s Dwelling invites you to reflect on the lives of those who lived and worked here.
