Amidst the ruins of Yuan Ming Yuan Park, lies the serene Minghe Yuan Lake. This lake, once a centerpiece of the Old Summer Palace, reflects a history of both beauty and destruction. Yuan Ming Yuan Park, also known as the Gardens of Perfect Brightness, was a sprawling imperial garden northwest of Beijing. It served as the primary residence of the Qianlong Emperor and his successors.

Minghe Yuan Lake was just one part of this vast complex, which included three separate gardens: Yuanmingyuan, Changchunyuan (Garden of Everlasting Spring), and Qichunyuan (Garden of Flourishing Spring). Imagine the grandeur of this place, covering over 3.5 square kilometers! Each garden boasted unique architectural designs, landscapes, and artistic creations. Even in ruins, walking through the park offers a glimpse into its former glory.

The lake itself was a marvel of design, with elaborate canals and waterways winding through the gardens. These waterways served not only as decorative features but also as a means of transportation. Emperors and their court would cruise along these canals in elaborate boats, enjoying the ever-changing scenery. Think of the tranquil beauty these waterways must have provided in their prime.

Tragically, the Old Summer Palace, including Minghe Yuan Lake, was plundered and destroyed by British and French forces in 1860 during the Second Opium War. It took 4,000 men three days to demolish the palace. Countless priceless artifacts were stolen, including sculptures, porcelain, jade, silk robes, gold, and more. UNESCO reports that these stolen treasures are now scattered across 47 museums worldwide.

Today, the park stands as a poignant reminder of China’s rich past. Crumbling walls and scattered relics whisper stories of a vanished era. While the destruction is evident, a sense of resilience prevails. The park, including Minghe Yuan Lake, endures, showcasing China’s enduring spirit. The remaining structures, like the Siyong Lodge and the Lion Grove Garden, still evoke a sense of awe and wonder.

If you visit Yuan Ming Yuan Park today, take your time. Bring plenty of water and snacks, although you can purchase these items within the park at a slightly higher cost. Explore the remnants of Minghe Yuan Lake and imagine the bustling life and breathtaking beauty that once graced this historic site.
