Picture this Samford Conservation Park a sprawling 624 hectares of natural beauty. It’s a haven for native Australian plants and animals a sanctuary just a short drive from Brisbane’s bustling city centre.

Samford Conservation Park wasn’t always a protected area. For thousands of years the land sustained life. Indigenous people knew it as Kupidabin a place of possums in the Waka language. Later it served various purposes. Part of it was even a timber reserve in 1873. Gold prospectors searched for riches but found little. A train line once ran through the park connecting Camp Mountain to Ferny Grove. Tragedy struck in the late 1940s a train derailment resulted in sixteen deaths and many injuries. The line closed soon after.

Today Samford Conservation Park offers a peaceful escape. Picnic tables and barbecues dot the landscape. The Ironbark Gully picnic area is particularly popular. Shade from the impressive narrow-leaved red ironbark trees provides relief from the sun. Visitors often spot native wildlife. Possums lorikeets and even flying-foxes call the park home. The Crebra Circuit a short walking track winds through the ironbark forest. Keep an eye out for the colourful Rainbow Lorikeets or even the Powerful Owl Australia’s largest. Remember everything in the park is protected. Don’t disturb the plants or animals. Keep your dogs leashed and pack out your rubbish. No bins are available in the park.

Samford Conservation Park is managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. They work hard to protect its conservation values and the recreational opportunities it provides. It forms part of the Mountains to Mangroves Corridor connecting bushland from the D’Aguilar Range through to Moreton Bay. This corridor is vital for protecting habitats and ensuring the survival of diverse wildlife.

So breathe in the fresh air. Enjoy a barbecue surrounded by nature. Explore the walking tracks. Samford Conservation Park offers a unique blend of history nature and recreation. It’s a special place indeed a true escape from city life. A place where the past and present coexist in perfect harmony. Remember to respect this precious environment.
