It holds centuries of Chemnitz history. A beacon in the northeast of Chemnitz, Stiftskirche Ebersdorf has drawn pilgrims for centuries. The draw? A revered Marienaltar, a sacred space dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus. Today, it stands as a testament to faith. Originally a modest Romanesque church from the 12th century, Stiftskirche Ebersdorf underwent a magnificent transformation in the 15th century. It was expanded and rebuilt in the soaring Gothic style we admire today. This was no mere renovation. The new church was actually built *around* the old one. The old walls became supports for the new. This gives Stiftskirche Ebersdorf its unique asymmetrical layout. The wooden Madonna within the church is believed to be the original object of pilgrimage, dating back to the first half of the 14th century. Stiftskirche Ebersdorf’s Gothic architecture is enhanced by a late-medieval fortified enclosure. The grounds feature defensive towers and a small octagonal chapel, a quiet place for reflection known as the “Raum der Stille” or “Room of Silence”. This chapel’s interior boasts a vibrantly colored pear-shaped vault and recently rediscovered frescoes. The church also houses treasures like the Harras Epitaph, created by Hans Witten around 1502. This epitaph depicts Dietrich von Harras, a knight and patron of the church, standing atop a lion. Stiftskirche Ebersdorf holds not only religious significance. It also played a role in one of Saxony’s most dramatic historical events: the Saxon Prinzenraub, or “Princes’ Abduction”, of 1455. Following the rescue of the kidnapped princes, their parents made a pilgrimage here to give thanks. The princes’ clothes remain on display, a poignant reminder of this historical event. Inside the church are other unique treasures. These include a pair of carved wooden lectern figures. One depicts a deacon, the other an angel. These figures are a rare example of anthropomorphic, or human-shaped, lecterns. Stiftskirche Ebersdorf stands as a testament to enduring faith and a rich, interwoven history. It is more than just a church; it is a living story.
