Eleven thousand people call Groβ Flottbek home. This charming Hamburg quarter nestled in the Altona borough boasts a rich history. It first appeared in records way back in 1305. For over two centuries between 1640 and 1866 Groβ Flottbek was even part of Denmark.
Imagine the lives lived here during that time. Imagine the daily routines. Fishing boats returning to the Flottbek stream. Children playing in the streets. The sounds of a very different Hamburg.
The Greater Hamburg Act changed everything. In 1937/1938 Groβ Flottbek became part of Hamburg. The area developed rapidly. Today elegant mansions and residential areas are prominent features.
Groβ Flottbek’s architecture reflects its changing fortunes. The impressive Groβ Flottbek church designed by Raabe & Wöhlecke opened its doors in 1912. The older part of the town’s cemetery even repurposes remnants of a nearby Stone Age burial site as gravestones. That’s some smart-aleck knowledge for you!
The area’s history is also reflected in its names. Street names like Zum Hünengrab and Urnenfeld hint at its prehistoric past. The Hünengrab a burial mound was unfortunately plundered over the centuries then used as building material. Artefacts from the site now reside in the Helms-Museum in Hamburg-Harburg.
Groβ Flottbek is not just about the past. The Waitzstraße is a bustling shopping street though it’s gained notoriety for a bizarre series of car crashes into shop windows. Between 2005 and 2022 twenty-four vehicles crashed into shop fronts. The local council has even installed barriers to try to remedy the situation.
The Waitzstraße isn’t the only thing drawing attention. Groβ Flottbek is home to the Norddeutscher and Flottbeker Reiterverein. This equestrian club co-organises the prestigious German Jumping and Dressage Derby. This international event takes place every May near the Klein Flottbek S-Bahn station.
